The Intermediate Accountant is responsible for independently delivering accurate and timely accounting and tax compliance services to a portfolio of New Zealand clients. This role is not suitable for graduates or junior accountants and is intended for an established intermediate‑level professional with prior public practice experience.
The role supports senior accountants and directors by taking ownership of routine compliance work, applying sound judgement, and ensuring work is completed to firm standards with minimal supervision. The position requires confidence in NZ accounting and tax compliance, strong organisational skills, and the ability to manage competing deadlines in a busy practice environment.
Responsibilities:
Independently prepare financial statements and tax returns for NZ individuals, companies, trusts, and partnerships
Prepare and review GST returns and related reconciliations
Manage allocated client work end‑to‑end, including job planning and timely delivery
Identify and clearly communicate issues, risks, or anomalies to senior team members
Maintain accurate client files and workflow status in practice management systems
Support senior accountants through reliable preparation and well‑documented workpapers
Adhere to firm standards, quality controls, and deadlines
Essential Skills and Experience (Minimum Requirements):
Minimum 3+ years’ experience in public practice accounting
Demonstrated experience working at an Intermediate Accountant level (not graduate or junior)
Hands‑on experience with NZ accounting and tax compliance
Ability to complete routine jobs independently without step‑by‑step direction
Xero experience essential; XPM or similar workflow tools strongly preferred
Strong attention to detail, organisation, and deadline management
Ability to exercise judgement and escalate issues appropriately
Clear, professional written and verbal communication
This role is not suitable for candidates who require extensive training or are still developing core compliance skills.
Qualifications:
Relevant accounting qualification or equivalent professional experience
CA or CA‑in‑Progress preferred but not essential

Hybrid work setup, with onsite attendance preferred initially
Hours aligned to New Zealand business time:
10:30am – 7:00pm NZT
6:30am – 3:00pm PHT
